Reid Between The Lines

  okay, it's been a week
It took me 7 days to get over the Redskins loss against the Giants. Some of my colleagues went on their blogs the minute the game was over and just poured their angry thoughts, into their pieces. I instead decided to wait and by letting the loss fester, I became more upset.

These are situations the Redskins can not keep finding themselves in. Losing to a team, that they are better than and actually outplayed for a half. Their young quarterback, Jason Campbell, made young mistakes but when they needed him, number 17 got the job done and got the Skins to the 3 yard line. That's when the travashamockery happened. They spiked the ball, they rolled Mike Sellers on a pass play and then 2 poor running plays. I know Clinton Portis was on the sidelines for all of this but if you can't crush a grape from the one, then you deserve to lose. I was amazed afterwards to hear the explanations. How those, were the best plays that gave them a chance to win. Really?

A play to seal the deal, with possibly your best player on the sideline, does not give you the best chance to win. I could listen to any argument and I will always believe, Portis should have been in the game. The Redskins coaching staff, needs to really sit back and practice game situations because we tend to talk about the fumbling decisions, in burgundy and gold crunch time, just a little bit too much.

Then going into the bye week, Joe Gibbs decided to give the team, the week off to heal up. What? Am I living in bizarro world. They need to practice. The Skins need to build chemistry and they need to build some passion. Everyone of those guys loves to play football, I'm just not sure they love playing with one another. Don't get me wrong, they are all friends but when they lace them up, there are some guys who don't bring their all for the group.

THOUGHTS:

On Brandon Lloyd: He has jacked the Skins for millions of dollars. This heist is bigger than the brinks job. Brandon Lloyd should cash his checks with a ski mask because he is straight up stealing from the burgundy and gold. What did they Skins think they were getting? I tell you this, he better put out a great album because he football career stopped and collapsed at Redskins Park.

On Manny Acta: I know he is not going to get manager of the year but Mr. Acta deserves a couple of votes. The Washington Nationals were supposed to be historically bad this year and when they started many people, including myself, thought that was going to be the case. The Nationals got better and then they started to play Manny ball. The team became gutsy and gritty and they started to win games. Manny Acta was the right coach for the job and the Nationals did the correct move by exercising the option on his contract.

On the San Francisco Giants: How dare they not hold a big ceremony for Barry Bonds' last game in San Fran. We all know Barry is an awful human being but the Giants owe him a ton. Without Barry, the San Francisco organization wouldn't have the fans, they wouldn't have the new stadium, they wouldn't have had number 756, they wouldn't have had 73, they would have never made to the play-offs and the world series. I wanted to see the game end and then roll out the podium and say thank you. Willie Mays, Barry's god father would have also been a great touch. Instead, for a guy, the Giants stood by for all these years, when it was over, they left him hanging. I could be wrong but I think even Barry Bonds deserves better.

Comments:
It's early in the season, so my grief only lasted a few days. I think I posted something on Derek's blog about it.
The big thing was that it was a Division Game" and we caved in on a 14 point lead.

I just can't get into finger pointing though, mainly because if the Coaches start listening to the critics, who's at the wheel? So I may have some opinions, I just keep them to myself and trust in the leadership. "too many chefs"
My role is to be a fan, it's their job to make them win.

On Thoughts?
Not too familiar with the Nats, like college ball I follow it casually until it gets serious (NCAA tourney or playoffs/World series).
The Nats are young here, its a new start and I hope it stays.
I guess if Manny Atca has the stuff to make the most of what he has, I may be watching them more closely next year.

On Bonds? Are you comparing him to the Babe?

I don't know... sports in general has become so much more a business and not as much a love. Walk on players that become greats are very rare these days, kids are farmed straight out of kindergarten, and as they pass each filter are groomed into Pro Careers. So steroids become a tool for an edge and corrupt what remains of sports integrity.
I guess I'm too idealistic, but I'd like to see talent not influenced by anything other than hard work and ambition; Also the love of the sport, and not the pot of gold.

I can't blame Bonds if indeed he is guilty of drug use, I blame the "industry". So yeah I agree he should have had a ceremony with an asterisk. I think that would have been both entertaining and interesting.

I had a few thoughts as well... On Torre.

Just a quote from an article that I agree with, when it comes to a team, and team play.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071009/ap_on_sp_ba_ne/bba_yankees_torre_20

from the article:
Mattingly, a fan favorite and ex-Yankees captain, was Torre's bench coach this year after previously serving as the team's hitting instructor.
"There is no fall guy. We win and lose as an organization," Cashman said, "There will be no scapegoats, There will be no finger pointing. Whatever we did, we did together."

That's how I define team play.
In the end, nothing matters but the team.

And BTW: George Steinbrenner would have to be off his rocker to replace Torre...
