There's Righteous, and Then There's Just Plain Right

Okay, so Michael Vick is a thug. What we used to call a nail-head. Under the light of these allegations of indescribable cruelty we now see clearly Vick's arrogance, his depravity ...his brutish bloodthirstiness, and everyone is feeling a huge jolt of righteous fury.
McGinty's Mailbag is full of your outrage. And I know its very heady stuff--getting all worked up to despise someone we know truly deserves it.
But I am asking us all to do the hard thing. Take a breath. Sit back. and just .... Consider. Michael Vick did truly evil things to dogs. But he didn't ruin anyone's life or take anyone's property. Does he deserve two seperate prosecutions and several years in prison? It seems like piling on, to use a football expression.
Does he really deserve to lose his entire career when there are people in the NFL who killed people while drunk behind the wheel and they're still playing? (See Leonard Little).
If Vick can find it in himself to change, realize how barbaric he has become and sincerely and publicly repent(and I know thats a big 'if'), is he any less deserving of a second chance than any of us?
People will ask me why I'm defending such an awful person, and I will say its not about him at all. Its about us and how we treat even the bad people.
Michael Vick lost touch with his humanity. I'm just saying in the midst of dealing out justice we should keep in close contact with our own, and remember his too.

Well...I didn't even want to bring up the "R" word. But since you did, its hard not to think that plays in there somewhere, though lets be real--if Vick were White he'd still be in major major trouble.

I said if I heard another comment about Michael Vick and the dog fights I was going to comment as well. Clearly he made a mistake and he should be punished for that. He also needs to choose his friends and investments more carefully. Let me say, I know that animals have feelings, I'm a dog lover. I know that what was done to those dogs was horrible. But, dog fighting has been around forever and will continue to exist. What bothers me, is the anger, hostility, and outcry about the treatment of dogs, when our children are being kidnapped, beaten, starved, raped, molested, and killed every day. No one makes the kind of demands for punishment when it comes to children. It seems that this society values the life of an animal more than human life. And I would appreciate those animal lovers not call their dogs and cats their children because they are not. And yes I am a mother of two. Thanks Derrick for listening.

Oh good God.. Here we go with the "children" thing again. What in the heck does what is being done/said regarding Mr. Vick have to do with children?? Don't you read the paper or watch the news? People who harm children are hauled away to jail. We hear of it alomost every day in the news. Harming/abusing children is just not tolerated in our society! There are also laws against dog fighting and cruelty to animals too. Shouldn't they too be enforced? All this discussion regarding Michael Vick is because he is a millionaire sports celebrity. Football is BIG business with HUGE money involved. This money is not paid to participants, who by their personal actions bring boo's from the stands when they enter the field! It's ENTERTAINMENT, pure and simple.. When you lose your appeal to the public, then you have no value to the business! If Mr. Vick was an engineer, pilot, architect or some other non entertainment career person then after "paying his debt to society" he could continue with his career. It's the same as politics, the public decides. Perhaps they can forgive, but maybe not forget. Also,if I choose to refer to my pets as my children it's none of your damned business lady!!

OK, Vick should never play football again. The NFL requires a better image from its celebrities. Vick ruined his image by his behavior.

As far as pitbull fights, I don't agree with the blood sport but in fairness, cruelty such as this is also part of other cultures. Bull fighting is the best example.

This does not excuse torturing dogs and executing them in unspeakable ways after losing a fight.

This puts Vick right beside Jeffrey Dahmer IMO.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Dahmer

As torturing animals is behavior that leads to even more heinous activity. Its sick

So yes the story has been beat to death. Maybe Vick can change, maybe not... he did this to himself.
