Does This Hi-Def Make Me Look Fat?
When I meet someone in person who knows me only from TV they pretty much always say the same thing. The conversation goes like this:
Them: I like your show, even though I miss you on radio.
Me: Thanks. I appreciate the support.
Them: You know, you look a lot a) Better or b) younger or c) thinner in person than you do on TV.
Me: Thanks. I think....
I mean is that really a compliment? Cause what it could mean is "You look really bad on TV. Glad to see you're not so montrous in person."
While they say television adds ten pounds, I think almost no one looks as good on television as in real life and it has nothing to do with your sparkling personality.
Its because in high def or no def, a televisiion picture is flat. And we people in all of our bumpy glory are notoriously 3 dimensional. Squeeze the 3D into a 2D space and you get all sorts of shadows and reflections that by necessity make us look ...well....not quite ourselves.
Think about that next time you wonder how someone so funny looking with no hair got that anchor job.
On the other hand, I'm not sure this really explains why my head looks so dang big......

Since you brought it up... when I met you in person, I thought just that... his head is nowhere near as large as it looks on TV. The camera is not doing you any favors in that department, but then again neither is that silly picture attached to your blog. It is, however, entertaining.
And entertaining is good....right?
dang derek, i have seen you on tv and i think you are very very handsome and you have a great smile. you are also a great dresser and you choose great colors, never tooooooflashy always just right. so stop being so hard on yourself, you are FINE!!!!!!! ok?and as far as your head goes it's beautiful toooo! you are that and a bag of chips!!!!!!!!

Hey Derek,
The last time that I saw you was in junior high school (definitely elementary school). You were one of my "little friends" who definitely took your education very seriously at a young age. When I first saw you on television many years ago - I noticed that you really haven't changed much at all (just the hair).
You were a polite, thoughtful and intelligent young man with a wonderful personality. You seem to possess the same traits in your later years. Isn't that all that really matters anyway?
