911 Calls and Emergency Radio Traffic From Vienna, Virginia Fireworks Mishap

It was a difficult night for some members of the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department. July 4th and they were on hand to make sure the fireworks for the Town of Vienna, Virginia went off safely. Everything went well until just before the fireworks were to end.

That's when a misfire caused a cake box holding fireworks to tip over. This allowed the fireworks to shoot across the ground. Suddenly Battalion Chief Keith Johnson, from the fire prevention division, found himself in charge of a very different operation. Johnson immediately called for help on his radio, requesting an EMS task force and a medevac helicopter. He also established the incident command.

At the same time, people at the fireworks display grabbed their cell phones to call 911 for help.

Seven people were hurt, including Andre Hollis' wife and 3-year-old son. Hollis told The Washington Post's Tom Jackman this week, that the serious injuries to Kathryn and Max Hollis might have been worse if Chief Johnson and the helicopter had not been there:

"Had they not been there," Hollis said, "there would have been at least one funeral. I owe them so much."

STATter 911 has the 911 calls and the emergency radio traffic from that night.

Comments:
My hat is off to the Dispatcher on this incident. One hell of a job keeping it all straight!

this was clearly an accident. as a pyrotech from ny, don't let this ruin future shows. but it sounds like the cake was too close to both the racks and people. were the measurments followed? those cakes weigh 30- 40 lbs on the bigger ones. get rid of the company that did the show and ensure that the next one follows the measurments.

Too bad that the Town of Vienna didn't fire Schaeffer Pyrotechnics after the huge incident in Pittston, PA and then fining by OSHA. This company did not have a good record, IMHO.

HEY it is very easy to say that it was an accident!!! Was one of your kids hurt? Mine was it is the WORST thing in the world to see - your child COVERED in blood and not knowing if they are ok. You need to keep your H/A opinions to yourself.

HELLO MY NAME IS JASON
I WAS ONE OF THREE PYRO-TECHS
SHOOTING THE SHOW THAT NIGHT
IN VIENNA. I'M HERE TO TELL U THAT ALL!! EMS,FIRE,POLICE DID! EVERY THING THAT THEY COULD DO!
THIS WAS A ACCIDENT, EVERY PRECAUTION WAS MADE BY FIRE MARSHELS, MEASERMUNTS WERE MADE AND DOUBLE,TRIPPLE CHEKED!
THIS WAS A FAULTY "CAKE" FROM CHINA
I'V BEEN WITH THE COMPANY FOR A 10+ YEARS. I'M SO SORRY THAT THIS HAPPENED. EVEN WITH DOUBLE SAND BAGGING THE BOXS THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE! FORTHER MORE U CAN'T REBAR INTO A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR ASTROTURFF FIELD! MY HEART GOS OUT TO ANY BODY HEART BY THIS :(
EVEN WEEKS LATER I STILL CANT GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD!

PS THE PA PITTSTON INCIDENT WAS I THINK AND DONT QUOT ME A "SHOOTER"
TYPE ACCIDENT,NOT A PRODUCT ISSUE.
I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THAT ACCIDENT.

PLEASE LEAVE ME MESSAGES IF YOU WERE THERE,I WAS ONE OF THE GUYS
RUNNING AWAY WITH A FLARE ON THE VIDEO.

Hey Jason, You should have been standing downrange then you could have fielded one instead of my little kid and the others. This was no accident. The unsuspecting public was well within range so I think the measurements could not have been correct and the mortors were not secured/buried in the ground or we wouldn't have this exchange. Would we? EASY to blame the Chinese!

Outraged Father!
