Blues Alley Feeling Blue?
Blues Alley, the popular Georgetown nightspot hasn't had a lease since 1998 and that has the current managers concerned that the prominent Jazz club and restaurant may be nearing it's last days.
The property located in an alley just off Wisconsin Avenue near M street has been a fixture in DC since it opened it's doors in 1965. The place has showcased some great ones, including Dizzy Gillespie Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Phyllis Hyman, Ramsey Lewis, Charlie Byrd and Maynard Ferguson.
Blues Alley owners don't own the building. That belongs to Germar Properties of DC and word is the owners want the kind of tax assessment break that DC politicians got for another historic spot, Ben's Chili bowl. That doesn't seem likely, for now. I'll keep you posted right here.
In the meantime, click on the link below to view a report I did some years ago when the group "War" performed on stage at Blues Alley.
