A Busy October...

Last Wednesday, October 4th, I helped celebrate the 3rd anniversary of Men Against Breast Cancer at the group’s Pink & Blue Gala. MABC co-founders, Marc Heyison and Stephen Peck, recognized Professor Ernestine Bradley of the New School University in NYC, a survivor; The Honorable Sue Kelly (R-NY) an advocate for women’s health issues on Capitol Hill; and Ms. Rosemary Williams, Director of the Tumor Registry at Howard University Hospital. Proceeds from the event benefited the Breast Cancer Care Foundation, the Cancer Research & Prevention Foundation (sponsors of the Mammovan), the Howard University Mammo Days program, and Men Against Breast Cancer’s Partners in Survival program.

This Wednesday evening October 11th, I‘ll help kick off a shopping weekend at Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase to raise money for breast cancer research. It’s called ‘Key to the Cure.’ A portion of sales at the Chevy Chase store from Wednesday thru Sunday will support research aimed at finding a cure.

This Thursday afternoon October 12th - no more excuses for putting off your annual mammogram or scheduling your first mammogram if you’re over 35. The GW Mammovan will be parked in the lot at the Lord & Taylor Chevy Chase, DC store beginning at 1PM on Thursday. It will be in the same location all day Friday the 13th. The state-of-the-art Mammovan is the only one in the country outfitted with digital screening, which is more technologically advanced and different from traditional mammography practices. Walk ups are encouraged, but to schedule an appointment, call 202-741-3020. Or you can get more information about eligibility at the wusa9.com homepage.

Also, check out my interview with Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Senator John Edwards. Last week on 9 News at 9 AM Mrs. Edwards talked about her road to survival from breast cancer in her new book “Saving Graces.” It’s at wusa9.com, click on Archives and type in her name.

Please, don’t forget to call your Buddy this month and remind her to keep up with the monthly breast self exams, to call for a clinical exam, and to schedule an annual mammogram if she’s over 40.

For younger women, ages 20-30, click on Buddy Check and learn about the new twist on the old fashioned way of conducting a clinical breast exam. This breast exam is having more success at finding lumps in the dense breast tissue of younger women than traditional mammography. Check it out then speak with your physician.

Wishing you continued good breast health,
Andrea Roane
