Dave Statter's Biography & Contact Information
202 895 5581
Dave Statter joined 9NEWS NOW (WUSA-TV) in Washington, DC as a general assignment reporter in August 1985. Since May of 2007 he has also edited the website STATter911.com. STATter 911 focuses on fire and EMS issues worldwide, with special attention to news and videos Dave generates from the Metropolitan Washington area.
Besides a career in broadcasting that began in 1972, Dave was a volunteer firefighter in Oxon Hill, MD from 1974 to 1980. Dave also worked as a dispatcher for the Prince George's County, MD Fire Department from 1976 to 1979. In 1977 Dave was in the first group of Cardiac Rescue Technicians certified in Prince George's County.
Dave, along with his wife Hillary Howard, an anchor at all-news WTOP Radio, annually host the satellite uplink from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, MD. In 2007, STATter 911, in partnership with Firehouse.com, provided the first-ever live streaming of the events, allowing the important ceremonies to be seen around the world.
In his broadcast career, before coming to 9NEWS NOW, Dave worked at WTOP Radio where he was a news and traffic reporter. Prior to that he worked at a number of radio stations in Southern Maryland and in his home town of Baltimore.
In 1997, Dave was the first in the mainstream press to discover and report on the problems with "Omega" fire sprinklers. "Omega" sprinklers were eventually recalled by the CPSC.
The stories he is most proud of came under the banner "Get Out Alive". From 1995 to 2001, 9NEWS NOW did a series of reports and a half-hour special teaching people what to do in case of a fire in a single family home, a high-rise building, and a garden-style apartment. Those reports and the special have been shown to the public at fire prevention seminars around the country. Thousands of brochures have been handed out by firefighters throughout the region. 9NEWS Now still gets requests for the brochures and tapes.
In 1993, Dave was named "Best Crime Reporter" by Washingtonian magazine. His still pictures of the arrest of James Edward Swann, the 1993 "Mount Pleasant Stalker," were used by 9NEWS NOW and on the front pages of The Washington Post, The Washington Times and in papers around the country.
In 1991 Dave won an Emmy for Spot News Coverage of the Mount Pleasant Riot. Dave, with the late photographer Sheldon Levy, received a Gold Medal in the International Film and TV Festival of New York for his coverage of the dramatic rescue of a family from its burning Northeast Washington home in 1989.
In 1988, he and 9NEWS NOW photographer Mike Flynn taped a DC ambulance searching for a location for 30 minutes. This coverage led The Washington Post to write a series of editorials on the subject, along with a greater examination of the local ambulance system.
In 1986, along with former 9NEWS NOW reporters Mike Buchanan and James Brown, Dave broke the tragic Len Bias story, receiving a 1987 United Press International Broadcast Journalism Award and a Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters' Association Award.
Dave's coverage of the 1987 Amtrak derailment, which prompted drug testing of all future Amtrak employees, won a local Emmy and a 1988 Chesapeake AP Broadcasters' Association Award. In 1989, Statter covered two nights of rioting in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Dave has extensive experience in hurricane coverage including reporting from Charleston, SC as hurricane Hugo made its direct hit on the city. In his spare time Dave also has spent many hours storm chasing in the Midwest and Great Plains.
His first live reporting assignment for WTOP Radio was covering the 1982 Air Florida disaster.
Dave and Hillary live in Falls Church, Virginia with their son Sam.
thank you
I can't believe you're not all over this story: D.C. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin will have the 32-member recruiting class and instructors serve drinks and cake at Councilman Jim Graham’s holiday party on Monday. District fire academy recruits will spend part of their training time serving drinks and passing out cake at a council member’s ward parties rather than learning how to save lives and fight fires.
Keep up the tremendous reporting. I tried to find a wikipedia page for you and couldn't. I'll use this site as my info.

Dismissed as Walter Reed Chief
You have been informed several times about Chief Crampton and his conduct but have never done a sigle story. What is the deal???
Read for yourself http://www.stmarystoday.com/News/CalvertFire&RescueChairmanTerminatedasChief.html
Then call Walter Reed. There are alot of people that would love to know why there was over 40 charges brought against te man and nothing more was done. Plus you have replacement Chief that does the exact same thing and Walter Reed Garison doesn't do anything about it. Get to work and get the scoop.

You are slacking on the Channel 5 story from VA last week about the take home cars and the perks. Why not check out PGFD. There are lots of take home cars there, even the volunteers. Check into the Volunter Fire commission VICE chair who takes he car to Calvert County every day and god knows where else.
If you could, and its not too much to ask could you post a blurb about remembering Kyle Wilson, died two years ago today in the line of duty in Prince William County. May he rest in peace and all those who are left behind that miss and love him dearly, have the strength to carry on.
Thanks,

In the Bull Run Observer this week there is a letter from the former Chief thanking the citizens for their support and patting himself on the back for all his accomplishments over the last 50 years. This just shows how much he is a legend in his own mind.
He signs the letter as 'retired'. He and his wife in fact were forced to retire by the membership under threat of a vote to remove them. They disgraced the department and the fire service and worse yet, forced the stand-down of ALL the vols they claim to have trained.
Four months later, the County is still running the station. The vols are having to go through county physicals and prove their training to the county before being allowed to run again, not as GDVFD but as PWC vols.
So, even though the former chief claims to have provided service to the citizens for so many years 'using' vols, he is also the reason that vols are no longer allowed to provide service to the community. He left in disgrace and in fact, has been told by the county he is not allowed on the station property.
Rumor has it that he even left the county to avoid prosecution from the County. But that probably won't happen as he destroyed so many records before being removed. There are not too many in the fire service that were sorry to see him and his wife removed.
In your report tonight at 11:03, you have made a statement regarding Washington, DC being 'suburban Washington'. Washington, DC does not have a suburb. We are surrounded by states. Washington, DC is NOT a state; therefore, it should be respected as a city until further notice. Please remember that when reporting, children are listening and paying attention to what is being said, especially when a news reporter makes a mistake when discussing geography.
Are you saying that Prince George's County and Montgomery County are not suburbs of Washington, DC?
A quiz for you? What does the "WS" stand for in "WSSC"?
Please get back to me on that.

While I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC, I noticed dry hydrants situated near the newer highrises.
I counted 9 on Ocean Blvd. The Myrtle Beach Fire Department requires all new or remodeled high rise to install dry hydrants to their swimming pools.
Would this possibly help this situation in some areas of D.C.?

At 1300, the Locals met with Chief Clack, the Labor Commissioner, and Deputy Mayor Thomaskutty to continue the budget discussions from the day before. This is where we are:
After furlough days and cuts in the unrepresented employees and other non-personnel related cuts, there remains a $2.9 deficit. We are ALL being asked to to agree to 5-8 furlough days (according to salary). There is no guarantee that there will not be further cuts later this year or next fiscal year. If we don't agree-there will be layoffs (no certain number yet). The Unions Executive Boards will meet next Tuesday to discuss the matter. NOTHING will be agreed to before the membership has a chance to speak/vote.
PLEASE, do not let this become an issue of dissention in the firehouses. It will not be allowed on this site (webmasters take note).
If anyone has any ideas-please let us know. I have already suggested getting rid of Dr. Levy. The FLSA issue is not on the table-that was a settlement between the courts and the City. Can't undo a court settlement.
I will keep getting you as much info as possible as I have it.
While reading about the issue of brownouts in LA, I came across this article about the death of a child from drowning and brownouts.
