Cold weather experiment: frozen T-shirt

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- When the weather is this cold, it gives First Alert meteorologist Erica Grow a chance to have a little bit of fun with it. You can do this one at home, too.

Soak an old cotton T-shirt thoroughly with water and hang it on a wire hanger. Let the shirt hang freely in the cold and windy weather. The T-shirt will freeze, stiff as a board, within an hour or two!

The reason this one works is because the ice bonds with the cotton in the T-shirt. It works better with cotton, because the natural fibers have more surface area for the ice to hold on. The icy bonds are strong enough to turn a soft T-shirt into a hard surface. This works even when temperatures are in the teens. It doesn't have to be sub-zero to create this effect.
