Capitol visitor center reopens after white substance found

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A spokesperson with Capitol Police says a white powdery substance was found Thursday shortly after 9 a.m., at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in the area of a statue from New Mexico.

The visitor center was evacuated and the Capitol Police Department's Hazardous Material Unit investigated the scene.

One thing police officials investigated was whether an overnight cleaning crew may have been in the area and left something behind as they were cleaning.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., the scene was cleared and the area reopened to staff and visitors.
