WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- WUSA9 and the USO of Metropolitan Washington partnered on Veterans Day for the USO-Metro's Holiday Food Basket program.

The program provides local active duty military families with baskets that include all the holiday food trimmings: turkey, milk, vegetables, stuffing, yams, potatoes, gravy, and pie.

However, the demand for these baskets is greater than the financial support.

While each basket for a family of 6 costs the USO of Metropolitan Washington $50, your donation, small or large, will be appreciated by the USO and the military families of our community.

"Holidays are especially important for military families who often experience extended separations," says Elaine Rogers, president of USO of Metropolitan Washington. "It is critical that we meet this need, and we're calling on the generous community for support."

During 9NEWS NOW from 5-7:30pm on Wednesday, we were able to help raise money for the program.

Viewers called in or logged in online and donated over $20,000 (and we're still counting!).  That's enough money to help buy 400 baskets for military families in our area.
