ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Authorities in Loudoun County have been getting reports of black bears roaming around the Ashburn area.
The latest sighting was Thursday morning, near Sanders Corner Elementary School. Principal Kathleen Hwang canceled recess, sent messages to parents and put students who usually walk onto buses. The bear was last seen heading for the woods.
The county animal control department received a report Tuesday of a bear along Claiborne Parkway. Also Tuesday, a bear cub was struck on the Dulles Greenway and had to be euthanized.
Virginia wildlife officials say black bear sightings are common in the state at this time of year, and they say there have been no known unprovoked bear attacks in Virginia.
