HYATTSVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Hyattsville police say that a female has been taken to a hospital following an officer-involved shooting at a home on Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the 5500 block of 43rd Avenue, say police. Between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, the incident initiated a police response.
When police arrived, the woman who lived at the resident would not leave the basement. Officials tried to persuade her to leave, instead she displayed a knife in a threatening manner. Police then used a Taser which was ineffective since she was wearing several layers of clothing. The officer then shot one round hitting the woman in the chest.
Police say the woman is recovering and in stable condition at the hospital.
They did say in a press release that "Past history indicates that mental health issues may be a factor."
The police officer involved in the incident was placed on leave.
