WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Someone broke into the Slavation Army offices in the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue on Sunday, making off with at least $10,000 intended for needy people.

The red Salvation Army kettles were left cracked open and thrown on the floor with nothing but loose change littered around them.

Administrators at the Southeast DC Salvation Army say a thief or pair of thieves broke in through a third floor balcony. They believe the persons responsible knew exactly what they were looking for when they broke in. The thieves systematically went from kettle to kettle taking out any dollar currency that was available, according to an official.

Cash was also taken from a safe which stored donation from the previous two days. The money was supposed to help needy families in Ward 7 this holiday season.

One thief ran to the doors and was confronted by a security officer. The thief pulled out a knife and managed to get away, say police.

Police are looking at video from surveillance cameras but have not made any arrests yet.
