NEW MARKET, Md. (WUSA9) -- Frederick County Sheriff's Office officials have released details in a murder-suicide that left a couple and their infant son dead.
Police say that Benyam Asefa shot his wife Barbara Giomarelli and their three-month-old son Samuel Asefa after a verbal argument escalated.
Investigation revealed that on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, Barbara took her five-year-old daughter upstairs to a bathroom to give her a bath. As she was filling the bath her husband Benyam came into the bathroom and the couple began to argue, officials said.
Both adults left the bathroom and at some point went downstairs where Benyam shot Barbara with a 9MM handgun. Barbara was holding her son Samuel. The bullet exited Barbara and killed Samuel. Benyam then shot himself, officials said.
Police say the five-year-old daughter stayed in the bathtub for some time before she left, dressed herself and went downstairs where she found her family members.
The girl then went to a neighbor's house, and the neighbor called 911.
Officials say Barbara and Samuel were found in the kitchen and Benjamin was found in the living/family room area on the same level, officials said.
It is unclear why the parents were arguing on the night of the incident. Investigators have received information from interviews that there were domestic issues in the past, none of which were reported.
