'New Giant opens in DC's resurgent Shaw neighorhood. Site of notorious shooting' (@BruceLeshan via Twitter)
WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Thursday was a huge day for the district's historic Shaw neighborhood.
The O Street market, once the scene of a notorious mass shooting, reopened with a new Giant Food store.
The opening of the new Giant marks the rebirth of a neighborhood that has struggled for decades.
Nineteen years ago, the scream of police sirens and shouts of terror rang through the O Street market.
An incomprehensible turf battle between rival street gangs sent bullets flying inside the market, killing a 15-year-old boy and injuring eight other people.
Now there's a hotel, restaurant and swanky apartments with amenities like a rooftop pool and a dog park.
