(WUSA9) -- The next governor of Virginia waded into an adoring crowd of supporters who gave him the rock star treatment. Though Terry McAuliffe won by only 2 percentage points, Democrats old and young are celebrating big.

McAuliffe thanked Ken Cuccinelli, called him a principled man, but referred to his opponent's stand against abortion, and gay marriage as reasons for the Republican's loss.

Democrat Ralph Northam had the only double digit victory in a statewide race beating EW Jackson for Lieutenant Governor.
Northram said the government shutdown resonated with voters, especially those in Northern Virginia. He said people just want elected officials to work together and come up with solutions.

Cuccinelli and Tea Party Senators Marco Rubio and Paul Rand said this race was a referendum on Obamacare. McAuliffe's win, may give a boost to the Affordable Care Act..

"I think Ken Cuccinelli was absolutely right, this was a referendum on Obamcare. And,Virginians, like the majority of Americans, have said tonight they do want everyone to have affordable health care," said

"Virginia, thank you, for letting me serve as the 72nd Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia," said McAuliffe as he exited the stage.
