Temple Hills, Md. (WUSA9) -- A 20-year-old man is in custody for his suspected involvement in a car theft-related shooting.

Rahman Elijah Mills, of Iverson Street in Hillcrest Heights, Md., was arrested Monday night by U.S. Park police at MedStar Hospital, Prince George's County police said. Mills is charged with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, reckless endangerment and other charges.

Officers responded to the 4300 block of 23rd Place in Temple Hills, Md. at 6:45 a.m. Monday for the report of a stolen vehicle, police said.

Preliminary investigation reveals an officer observed a suspect steal a Toyota Corolla from outside the officer's mother's home. The officer got into his personal vehicle and followed the suspect, catching up with him at Lyons and Olson Streets, police said.

The officer identified himself as a police officer and confronted the suspect, who revved the engine and began driving towards the officer. The officer fired several shots into the car as the suspect drove towards him and the suspect then drove off, police said.

The stolen Toyota was found abandoned a short time later in Hillcrest Heights. It's unclear if the suspect was struck by gunfire
