WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA9) -- D.C. cab drivers say they are pulling their cabs from the streets rather than risk a $250 ticket plus towing fees for not displaying the new dome light approved by the Taxi Cab Commission.

The light had to be displayed beginning November 1st.

The Taxicab Commission says 25 tickets and tows have occurred thus far. 3,810 cabs were displaying the new lights that tell if a cab is on or off duty.

But there are 6,500 hacker licenses in DC and that can only mean many hundreds of drivers are operating without the new dome lights or they have parked their vehicles and that could impact passengers need to hail a cab.

Drivers say there is a lengthy wait at the installation garages. and the price has gone up from less than $200 to nearly $500 for the lights.

A march by cab drivers on Mayor Gray's office was called off just as it was beginning after the Mayor's staff agreed to a meeting to discuss all the drivers grievances.
