WHEATON, Md. (WUSA9)-- Friday, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Gansler and his running mate commemorated Maryland's first Emancipation Day in Wheaton during a luncheon.
You may have remember that last spring, the Maryland General Assembly agreed to officially commemorate the 1864 adoption of the state's constitution, when slaves were declared freed.
The bill that led to the official day was co-sponsored by Delegate Ivey of and Senator Karen S. Montgomery of Montgomery County.
The governor signed legislation to declare Nov. 1 Maryland Emancipation Day.
