WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA9) Cab drivers in the District of Columbia have formed an association affiliated with the Teamsters Union reports the Associated Press.
DC has more than 6,000 independent cab drivers who work as owner-operators or lease their vehicles.
Teamsters President Jim Hoffa told the AP the association will pursue policies that are fair to those drivers and improve taxi service in Washington.
The deal comes as the District is modernizing the city's taxi fleet with required new dome lights, credit card readers, and uniform paint jobs - increasing costs for drivers.
A Teamster news release called the regulations burdensome and expensive.
