GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police say a 49-year-old woman was gunned down Saturday morning in Germantown.

It happened around 7:45 a.m. on Crystal Rock Dr, south of Rt. 118 in a busy area mixed with residents and businesses.

Charlene Turner was on her way to the grocery store when she heard gunfire.

"I was walking down there then all of a sudden I hear boom, boom, boom like 3 shots. I was so scared to turn around because after that I was shaking, you know."

Montgomery County Police arrived to find the woman lying in the middle of the street. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In a picture taken by our radio partner WNEW, her clothes, purse and umbrella still left in the middle of the road.

Our camera's captured detectives picking up a grilled sandwich perhaps what the woman was going to have for lunch today.

Turner, "It's just so sad. You never know when God is going to...you never know."

Witnesses say the woman lives in the nearby apartment complex and she was on her way to work when she was gunned down.

Brandon Austin, "she seemed like a nice lady. It doesn't seem like she would be involved in anything that would cause this kind of harm to her. I'm surprised."

The shooting happened close to a 7-11. Police are checking surveillance video. They are combing through the area, talking to witnesses and documenting possible bullet holes in the side of the building.

What ever happened that led up to the shooting, residents are disturbed by the violence in their neighborhood.

George Medrano, "I'm very scared now.

"In Germantown we have calls for service and quality of life issues. We don't have violent crime in the area so yes it is of concern to us," said Montgomery County Police Dept. PIO Cpt. Jim Daly.

Turner, "It's really sad. I hope it wasn't anything crazy or stupid because nowadays they just shoot people for anything."

This marks the fifth homicide so far this year in Montgomery County. Anyone with information should Crime Solvers at 301-279-8000.
