Monroe, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Doughty tossed a pair of touchdowns
and Leon Allen's fourth quarter score marked his second of the game, as
Western Kentucky blanked UL-Monroe in the second half for a 31-10 victory.
Doughty ended 24-for-36 with 370 yards passing and an interception, while
Antonio Andrews paced the rushing attack for the Hilltoppers (4-2, 1-1 Sun
Belt) with 155 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.
The Warhawks (2-4, 0-1) have been outscored 132-31 in dropping their last
three games. Brayle Brown was an ineffective 21-for-40 passing with 275 yards
and an interception. Jyruss Edwards scored the team's lone touchdown.
Western Kentucky, winners of three in a row, scored touchdowns on its first
two drives, with Willie McNeal and Allen hauling in 33-and 17-yard scores,
respectively, on throws from Doughty in opening a 14-0 lead.
The Warhawks got on the board with 33 seconds left in the first quarter. Four
plays after Kenzee Jackson's 69-yard catch-and-run, Edwards jumped into the
end zone on a 1-yard plunge to cut the UL-Monroe's deficit in half.
Justin Manton's 34-yard field goal just over six minutes into the second
quarter made it 14-10, but UL-Monroe wouldn't score again.
The Hilltoppers came away with no points after Andrews was stuffed for no gain
on the Warhawks' 1 as time expired in the first half, but the running back
made up for the missed opportunity on the team's first touch of the third,
scoring on a 6-yard rush to increase Western Kentucky's lead to 21-10.
Garrett Schwettman booted a 22-yard field goal on the Hilltoppers' next touch
and a five-yard touchdown run by Allen early in the fourth created a safe
31-10 advantage for the team with 10:17 left to play.
UL-Monroe win would even the two teams' records at 3-3
