WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Some of the area's best known local sports figures turned out Sunday for the funeral  of a popular local attorney.

The funeral for Robert Ades also attracted a lot of DC Police officers. It turns out that while he was very good at law, Robert Aides was even better at being a dependable, life-long friend.

The 65-year-old lawyer died recently after battling leukemia.

Maryland former basketball coach Gary Williams and Jim Boeheim were at his funeral. Boeheim told us, "I never went out to dinner with anybody the night before a game except for Rob."

A tough negotiator, he represented a number of sports figures. The lawyer threw an a-list party every year in the city, hosting the Final 4 tournament.

The hundreds who gathered at the Washington Hebrew Congregation Sunday remembered the friendship and the mentoring that came.

Sports was but a hobby for Rob. His real job was representing D.C. police officers. Every officer who ever got into trouble knew he had their back.  Sunday, he got a police escort all the way down I-95 to Richmond, Va. It was the kind of escort befitting someone who often held court at the Palm Restaurant and saw himself as the
"Godfather" and sometimes referred to as "The Guy."
