RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA9) -- In order to improve safety and security for students and teachers, Governor Bob McDonnell awarded $6 million for school security equipment grants, he said in a press release.

The grants will pay for video monitoring systems, metal detectors, among other security equipment for 459 schools in Virginia and some regional education programs. The General Assembly established the 'School Security Equipment Grant' program after the passage of the 2013 Appropriation Act and House Bill 2343. After this, the Virginia Public School Authority was able to fund up to $6 million, officials said.

This Act includes a second round of School Security Equipment Grants for next summer, not to exceed $5 million.

Governor McDonnell said in a press release, "These grants, and the other important steps we've taken this year to improve school security, will make a real difference as we strive to make sure Virginia's schools remain places where children can learn in safety."  McDonnell had created the blue-ribbon panel after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Secretary of Education Laura W. Fornash said, "We were all deeply moved by the heroism of the educators at Sandy Hook who gave their lives trying to protect their students. She along with with Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker and Secretary of Health and Human Resources Bill Hazel, co-chaired the task force.
