SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County police have identified the man shot and killed in Springfield, Va. on Thursday afternoon.
Police say officers had responded to a domestic dispute in the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court at approximately 2:40 p.m., police said. The complaintant told them a man had a firearm, and officers found that man standing at the front door of the home, say police. The complaintant had made his or her way outside.
Officers tried negotiating with the man at the front door and asked him to come out, but police say he refused.
At some point, an officer fired a shot at the man and it hit him, according to police. Police say the man then barricaded himself inside the home.
Police decided to use a hostage rescue vehicle to safely approach and enter the home to render aid to the man, say police, but once officers got inside the home they found the man dead.
Police have identified the man as 46-year-old John Geer.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the results of an investigation, according to police.
