WASHINGTON (AP) - The deputy prime minister of Vietnam will be visiting the District of Columbia's drug court to see how it works.
Nguyen Xuan Phuc plans to observe the courtroom and talk to the judge and representatives of the D.C. Pretrial Services Agency, which manages the program. The fact-finding visit is intended to help launch a similar program in Vietnam.
Drug court is designed for addicts charged with nonviolent offenses. They are given drug treatment, testing and other services, and if they complete the program successfully, they can avoid prosecution.
