FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA9) -- Virginia State Police are looking into suicide as a factor in the cause of a crash that killed a man at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg Va. on Monday.
Police responded to the call at around 6:31 p.m. when a single-engine Cessna 172M plane crashed near the runway. State police say the plane made a rapid descent before hitting the ground and bursting into flames.
Virginia State police say the pilot was 22-year-old Edwin G. Hassel of Fredericksburg. He was the only occupant of the plane and died in the crash.
The FAA and NTSB were notified of the crash, say state police.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
