ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man has been sentenced to 15 years for assaulting a police officer, officials said.
Clarence Tyree, 46, of Springfield, attacked a police officer who was investigating possible thefts in a private parking lot in the 100 block of South Peyton Street, police said.
The officer tried to detain Tyree who then repeatedly punched the officer in the head and knocked him to the ground. The attack left the officer unconscious and bleeding, at which point Tyree fled the scene, police said.
"Other officers responded and a short while later, Tyree approached one of the officers and identified himself," police said in a news release.
The officer was taken to the hospital and missed several weeks of work as a result of the incident, police said.
Tyree was convicted on May 7 and was sentenced in Alexandria Circuit Court on Thursday.
