WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Saturday marks the fourth anniversary of the metro crash that killed nine and hurt dozens more at Fort Totten.

Hundreds of people gathered and will be holding a funeral procession with candles to the spot were four years ago nine people lost their lives.

It was the worst crash in metro history, killing the train operator, eight passengers and injuring 80 more. The subsequent probe by the national transportation safety board uncovered a host of safety problems, poor maintenance, unsafe equipment and little concern for safety.

"It did seem for years the work we had done and the recommendations that we had made had fallen on deaf ears," an NTSB official said.

Since the crash metro addressed 24 of 34 safety recommendations by the NTSB but the structurally weak 1,000 series cars which propensity telescoped on impact t aggravated the severity of the crash, haven't been replaced. Metro says it will do so next year.

Metro settled the nine lawsuits filed by the survivors of the nine victims but because of the agreement itself, details of those settlements including the payouts have not been made public.
