The charges stem from an incident on December 6, 2012. Gansler says the assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a maximum fine of $2,500. The abuse charge carries a penalty of up to 5 years' incarceration and/or a $5,000 fine, says Gansler.

An arraignment date for Barnes is pending.
