WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- One man is dead and a D.C. police officer was hospitalized after a shooting on Wednesday.

Police say 34-year-old Nathaniel McRae of Northwest, D.C. died in the incident which began at approximately 2:15 p.m. Police say two police officers had spotted a vehicle taken during a carjacking in the 100 block of Joliet Street, SW and were able to get into ther cruiser and follow it. The vehicle then stopped at the 900 block of Barnaby Street, SE, say police, and a man got out of the vehicle. They say he then shot at the officers.

Another officer came to the scene and the man shot at that officer. The man then turned back to shoot at the original two officers, according to police. Police say the officers fired their guns and hit the man.

One woman tells WUSA9 that she was at the intersection about to turn when the suspect flew through the intersection. She says she heard about 12 shots fired.

The man was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, say police.

One of the officers suffered a minor wound, according to police, and was treated and released from the scene.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, someone shot at an off-duty police officer in the 33000 block of Clay Street NE. At approximately 1:31 p.m., an officer saw what appeared to be a robbery in progress, say police. Police say the officer had another shirt on top of his uniform shirt at the time. He opened the second shirt to reveal his uniform shirt inside his personal car, say police. When the officer got closer to the suspect, the suspect fired several shots, say police.

The officer did not return fire, according to police, and he was not injured. Police say they do not know if the suspect was struck and say he remains on the loose.
