WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells tells WUSA9 that he will enter the race for city mayor on Saturday.

Wells, a seven-year veteran of the city's legislative body, has represented the Ward six area which includes Capitol Hill, the Southwest waterfront and H street corridor in Northeast.

He says voters want to end corruption and establish ethics in public office and he won't be accepting corporate donations for his campaign.

If he wins he would become the Districts first white mayor since Congress gave D.C. voters home rule allowing them to elect their own public officials.

The Districts African American population, which was nearly 70 percent in the early 70's, is now just over 50 percent. Wells says he would not have been elected to the DC Council seven years ago without support from African American voters.
