WASHINGTON (WUSA9)-- Residents living at 5348 Call Street S.E. say an ever growing trash pile on the back side of the building is just one of the problems adding to the filth they are forced to live in.
They say their landlord abandoned the building months ago, and now it's falling into disrepair without anyone looking out for them or the building.
One neighbor told us the trash hadn't been picked up since Christmas. Another neighbor told us they have to pay for repairs themselves since no one ever comes out to help them. We're told some neighbors who live there don't pay rent and those that do pay it to a landlord and tenant court, not a manager or a landlord.
Charity Young, one of the residents said, "Some one help me I don't know what direction to go. I am a mother of 5 and this is horrid for my children to live."
DC's Department of Public Works says they have cited the building several times since last year. In fact they tell WUSA9 the fines total more than $16,000.
However, no one is paying the fines because no one is managing the building.
Young said, "If no one is taking responsibility for this building, then no one is going to pay the fines which means we will never get help."
The DPW says their next step is to clean the garbage dumpster and overflowed trash on Wednesday May 8th. They say once the figure out how much it will cost to pick up the garbage they could fine whoever is ultimately responsible for the building up to three times that cost.
