WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The rain did not stop scores of people from waiting outside Politics and Prose bookstore in Northwest D.C. for First Lady Michelle Obama's book signing event.

The line started forming three hours before the event  but they would have waited longer on Tuesday morning. One man was there to buy a Mother's Day gift for his wife or mother. He was only allowed to get one signed copy of Mrs Obama's first book, "American Grown."

A grade school girl said she was in line next to her mother because Michelle Obama was her role model -- a person who helped people like she wants to do.

Inside the first lady said the book, while about the garden she started in the White House, it is also about all the community gardens in the country-from rural America to Chicago's South Side - her old neighborhood.

Ending childhood obesity is the ultimate goal she said.

The crowd eventually formed a procession to a table where Michelle Obama sat to sign every book and chat with every person who came by.
