(USA TODAY) -- Two weeks ago, a respiratory infection forced Pink to cancel a concert in Birmingham, England. The response from some of her fans couldn't have made her feel much better.

The singer got so much hate mail over the incident that she posted an open letter on her website: "I am a human being, therefore I am able to catch illness. It is beyond my control - and I can't apologize for that."

The singer said she rode by the venue the night of the show and saw disappointed fans in line. "There was not an (expletive) thing I could do about any of it," she writes. "Except cry. My heart was absolutely broken."

Apologizing for having to cancel the date, she tells her disgruntled fans: "The fact that I don't get the benefit of the doubt from you saddens me. There is no way I can make up this date. ... And for any of you that believe in me, please know we did everything we could to try to make it happen."

Pink, who was scheduled to play tonight in Dusseldorf, Germany, says she has performed while ill on other shows on her current European tour: "You know what I've been performing through the last week? ROTA virus. Look it up." But the night of the Birmingham show, she says, "(I) physically could not get my sick (butt) on stage."

She ends the letter by telling any less than "loyal and understanding" fans to "kiss my entire almost back to healthy (butt)."
