WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- An elephant in need of more elephant companions is coming to Smithsonian's National Zoo. Zoo officials say Bozie, a 37-year-old female Asian elephant, will join the Washington herd.
Bozie will be on loan from the Baton Rouge Zoo, say officials. We are told her last companion at the Baton Rouge Zoo died in March. Elephants are social species and the zoos are working together to get Bozie with other Asian elephants, according to officials.
At the National Zoo, Bozie will go into quarantine for a minimum of 30 days, per standard procedure, then she will be introduced to elephants Ambika, Shanthi and Kandula, say officials.
Officials say Bozie was born in the wild around June 1975 and came to the U.S. from Sri Lanka in November 1976.
