LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) -- A Prince George's County police officer had to be rescued from his overturned police vehicle after an early morning crash in Laurel.
Corporal Clinton Copeland, spokesman for the police department, says the officer lost control of the SUV and hit the curb on Route 1 at Contee Road, causing the vehicle to roll over. The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 Monday morning. Officials say that the SUV hit a lamp post which fell and damaged several parked cars.
Rescuers from the Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and cut the officer out of the vehicle. He was later transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
According to Cpl. Copeland, the officer was trapped inside the vehicle by the way it landed, however, his injuries are reported to be very minor. He was treated and released from the hospital, say police.
According to police, preliminary investigation suggests speed and weather were factors in the accident.
