WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A woman was killed when she was struck by a vehicle as she walked on the sidewalk on Southwest, D.C., police said.
Police say 58-year-old Emmajean Gainey was killed on Sunday, between 1st street and South Capitol street in Southwest, shortly after 3 p.m. when a white Toyota Yaris went off the road and hit her, pinning her against a tree.
Police say the car narrowly missed another car before hitting Gainey.
Witnesses said Gainey had gone to church earlier in the day and was on her way to buy groceries for the family.
"This was always her routine...this is beginning to be to much for me," her son Shaun Watson said.
Police say they arrested 49-year-old Maria Nicole Werts of Southwest, D.C. She was charged with involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
