WASHINGTON (AP) - A Washington group is filing a lawsuit to stop the closure of 15 public schools in the city.

Empower DC said it would file its lawsuit Friday in D.C. Superior Court. The lawsuit says the planned school closures will disproportionately affect minority, special education and low income students. And it says that violates city and state laws and the U.S. Constitution.

Washington officials announced plans in January to close 15 schools with low attendance. The city said closing the schools and moving students to existing schools would save $19.5 million, $11.5 million of which would be re-invested in the school system. The first 13 schools are to close at the end of the current academic year. Two more schools will close at the end of 2014.
