SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County officials have learned they have more problems than they thought.

A consultant has told officials that its $112 million Silver Spring transit center is unsafe and unusable.

"Things are significantly worse, we have more problems then we originally thought we had," a Montgomery County official said.

The transit center on Colesville Road is intended to serve about 100,000 buses and commuters each day but cracks in the concrete caused the county to study the project safety.

"The load carrying capacity of the pour strips is somewhere between ten and 20 percent of what's otherwise required to actually operate buses through those driveways,"  John Markous, Deputy County Attorney said.

Now county officials are saying they simply don't know when repairs can be made and when the transit center can open.
