WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Officials with the Metropolitan Police Department say a woman was injured, and later died after her car struck a tree at 12th and Varnum streets in Northeast D.C.

Police say officers arrived at the scene at 7:58 a.m. Tuesday. The woman suffered serious injuries, according to police. The crash occurred near a hospital.

12th Street is closed from Allison to Upshur Streets. Police suggest drivers use 13th Street as an alternate route.
