FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- Fairfax County Police say a driver has been charged with DUI in a crash that injured an officer and two children who were in the driver's car on Monday night.
Fairfax County Police officials say one officer was conducting a traffic stop on eastbound I-66 near Monument Drive around 10:15 Monday night. Around the same time, Virginia State Police issued a lookout for a possible drunk driver in the area. According to Officer Godhardt, the officer completed the stop and was getting back into his cruiser when he was rear-ended by a Chevy. His cruiser struck the Toyota he had pulled over for the traffic stop. After the initial collision, the Chevy continued to travel a short distance east on I-66 before crashing into another car.
Police officials say a 6-year-old child in the Chevy was taken to a local hospital initially with threatening injuries but was later upgraded to non-life threatening injuries. A 1-year-old was injured but not transported, say police.
The 48-year-old officer, a 14-year veteran of the department, was also transported, to the hospital and has been released, say police.
The driver of the Toyota, a 29-year-old male from Silver Spring, Md., hit by the cruiser in the original traffic stop was transported with non-life threatening injuries, according to police, and the passenger in that car was not injured.
Police now say 26-year-old Diana Holloway, who was driving the Chevy, is charged with DUI. Police say there may be other charges.
The investigation into the crash blocked lanes on eastbound I-66 for over three hours. All lanes reopened around 2:00 a.m.
