ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA9) -- There was an outpouring of community support at a popular restaurant hosting a fundraiser for Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy on Sunday.
The veteran police officer was shot in the head in just nine days ago and is still recovering after getting surgery but making progress.
Officer Laboy was shot by a taxi driver during a routine traffic stop in Alexandria on Feb. 27. The suspect, 27-year-old Kashif Bashir of Woodbridge, Virginia, is in custody and has been charged with Malicious Wounding of a Law Enforcement Officer and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, police say.
Even two hours after the auction and fundraiser hundreds of residents stood in line to take part in the event.
"I think people knows that we are family people too and the overwhelming support here shows that," said Alexandria Police Officer Jason Story.
