WASHINGTON (WUSA 9) -- Authorities say that in January a big rockslide near towpath mile 155 in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park occurred downstream of the Paw Paw Tunnel. Due to the threat of another rockslide, the towpath area just downstream of the east portal of the Tunnel will stay closed until it can be cleared and the rest of the rock is stabilized, say park officials.
If you need to go around the area, park officials suggest using the Tunnel Hill Trail -- a dirt trail accessible at either end of the Paw Paw Tunnel. Officials warn that bicyclists should be cautious and get off bikes while on Tunnel Hill Trail because it is narrow and steep in some places. Officials say the additional travel time on this route is approximately 45 minutes.
The Paw Paw Tunnel will remain open. You can get into it from the west entrance only.
