DUNDALK, Md. (WUSA9) -- A teacher at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring, Md., has been charged with one count of possession of child pornography in Baltimore County on Friday, police say.
According to Montgomery County Public School officials, Lawrence Joynes, 54, has been placed on administrative leave while Montgomery County Police begin an investigation to determine if any criminal activities took place while Joynes was a teacher in the county.

Montgomery County Public School officials say New Hampshire Estates Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Marinda Thomas Evans, sent a recorded phone call home Thursday night and plans to send a letter home with students Friday evening.
According to MCPS officials, below is the script from Evans' call home to parents:
"This is Mrs. Evans, principal of New Hampshire Estates Elementary School. I am calling with the difficult news that one of our teachers has been arrested on charges he was in possession of inappropriate material on a computer. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Baltimore County Police Department. The teacher is being placed on administrative leave while this matter is investigated. A substitute will handle his classes for the foreseeable future and we expect no interruption to instruction. Please know that the safety and security of your children is our highest priority."
MCPS officials say Joynes has been with Montgomery County Public Schools for 27 years and has been at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School for the past 10 years.
Baltimore County Police say, Joynes is currently in the Baltimore County Detention Center on $1 million bail.
The investigation is ongoing.
