PALMER PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- Monday, Prince George's County Police officials say a ballistics match lead to the arrest of a man in the murder of Marckel Ross.

Twenty-year-old Travon Bennett of Bryans Road, Md. has been arrested in Ross' shooting death.  According to police, Bennett was arrested in November 2012 in an armed robbery in Prince George's County. Bennett reportedly had been on a robbery spree since May of last year.

Police say ballistics helped solve the Ross case. A gun recovered from the scene of the November armed robbery came back as a ballistics match with the bullet from the Ross crime scene, according to police.

Police also say some co-defendants in the robbery spree cases talked to officers about Bennett's involvement in the Ross case. One co-defendant reportedly told police that Bennett shot the gun used to kill Ross. Another co-defendant reported that Bennett had tried to rob Ross before he was shot, according to police.

Court records show multiple charges against Ross including robbery, assault and gun related offenses.

In September, Central High School honor roll student Marckel Ross was gunned down on his way to class. Ross was shot and killed in the 6100 block of Old Central Avenue on September 11 at approximately 6:50 a.m. The 18-year-old was in the 11th grade and was a track athlete. Hundreds packed the Jericho City of Praise church for the young man's funeral.

Last week, his mother Elizabeth said she wanted answers about her son's case. "It's like I'm numb," Elizabeth Ross said.

Elizabeth Ross was searching for justice about the crime, and when police said they were close to making an arrest she told us, "I guess it's going to bring some kind of closure, but it's not going to bring my son back."

The county has seen a rise in violence against teens recently.
"This is insane," Elizabeth Ross said. "[This] has really got to stop."

Ross said Marckel's brother was robbed at gunpoint about two blocks from where Marckel was murdered.
