Dr. Alex Naini Provides Tips On How To Beat Bad Breath

WASHINGTON (JCHAYWARD.COM) - Do you have a hot date this Valentine's Day? Make sure your breath is Valentine's ready! Over 40 million Americans have chronic bad breath including men and women, but 90% of cases are curable!

Cosmetic dentist, Dr. Alex Naini, says she has easy tips on how to keep your smile healthy, and breath fresh.

Owner of Aesthetics Dental Spa in Vienna, Va., Dr. Naini, joined JC Hayward on Wednesday to provide tips to on keeping your breath fresh and mouth clean in 2013.

A majority of Americans have bad breath at some point in the day, but many don't realize it or understand its causes.

How do you know if you have bad breath?

1. Use a spoon to scrape the white stuff off of the very back portion of your tongue-now smell it!

2. Blowing your breath in someones face and hoping they will tell you the truth!

Causes of bad breath:

1. Poor oral hygiene

2. Tobacco use. If you smoke, quit. Tobacco use is a guarantee of bad breath.

3. What you eat. Certain foods, such as garlic, contribute to bad breath.

4. Dry mouth. If your mouth is extremely dry, there is not enough saliva to wash away excess food particles and bacteria, which can cause an unpleasant smell.

5. Infections/periodontal disease: Bad breath that seems to have no other cause may indicate an infection elsewhere in the body or in the mouth.

6. Tongue bacteria. Bacterial growth on the tongue accounts for 80-90% of all cases of mouth related bad breath.

How to make your breath fresh:

1. Practice good oral Hygiene. Brush twice a day/floss once a day/ Brush your tongue too!! Or use a tongue scraper. Replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months.

2. See your dentist regularly- He or she will be able to tell if periodontal disease or an infection is the cause of bad breath.

3. Stop smoking or using chewing tobacco.

4. Drink water/chew gum/sugarless mints...stimulates the production of saliva which helps wash away food and bacteria 5. Keep a log of the foods you eat or medications you take- take to your dentist to review

6. Use an antiseptic mouthwash that kills the germs that cause bad breath. Ask your dentist which product is best for you.
