WASHINGTON (AP) - A Washington teenager has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for shooting a classmate in a high school parking lot.
Seventeen-year-old Brandon Smothers, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty in October to aggravated assault while armed. He was sentenced Friday.
Prosecutors say Smothers and the victim were in a verbal altercation on Sept. 19 at Coolidge High School. Authorities say Smothers was escorted out of the classroom and left the school.
Officials say after school ended, Smothers confronted the victim, pulled a semiautomatic handgun from his waist band and fired at the victim as he ran away.
The victim was hit four times in the leg and lower body.
