WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- You hear me say it every day: "give yourself extra time"... and we all heard about the first prize our area won on Tuesday.

The Texas Transportation Institute says D.C. has the worst congestion in the nation. It tops Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Boston.

We spend an average of 67 hours and 32 gallons of gas stuck in traffic every year. It's costing us $818 annually, and the prediction is that could go up to $1,000 a year by 2020.

So what are the solutions?

  1. Transit Use
  2. Telecommuting
  3. Tow Trucks poised on major routes
  4. Signal Light Timing
  5. Adjustable Toll Lanes (like the 95 Express Lanes)
  6. Biking

Our problems include high volume, lack of lanes available, constuction, weather, bad crashes, and special events such as the Ravens Parade Tuesday morning that was delayed due to gridlock.
