WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. police, the Department of Transportation and D.C. taxicab inspectors are teaming up to stop illegal U-turns on Washington's Pennsylvania Avenue.
The violation carries a $100 fine. Officers plan to hand out informational flyers to educate drivers and will write citations to those who make illegal turns on Wednesday.
Bicycle lanes now run down the center of Pennsylvania Avenue from 3rd to 15th streets, NW. Authorities say 11 out of 14 bicycle crashes in 2010 and 2011 involved U-turns.
Last year Mayor Vincent Gray ordered emergency rules to clarify that U-turns are prohibited across bicycle lanes, even when cyclists are not present.
